I think it would work as a standalone, but the reader would miss out on the subtleties of who Rue's allies and obstacles are and her history with them as well as her menagerie of pets.I have removed a star from this enjoyable, quick, easy and entertaining read because the blurb tells too much and doesn't live up to the promise of keeping you guessing until the end.
