Starship Factory is a quick-reference guide designed for writers, gamers, and creators of science fiction who want to bring their starships to life with realism and depth. The book is divided into three comprehensive sections:Section 1 – Crew & Command:Learn how to assemble the right people for every role aboard your ship. Topics include essential skills, job titles, rank structures, alignments, and more.Section 2 – Starship Design:Build anything from a sleek pleasure yacht to a massive warship, carrier, or freighter. This section walks you through key systems, compartments, and technologies—drawing on classic and modern science fiction as inspiration.Section 3 – Fleet Composition:Take your creation to the next level by organizing multiple ships into a cohesive fleet. Explore tactics, classifications, and organizational structures for large-scale operations. The newly revised third edition includes an improved table of contents, expanded detail across every topic, and fresh insights into starship design and worldbuilding—making it the most complete edition yet.
A Good Stater for Ship DescriptionsThe book is a good start. The author is funny and knowledgeable. His use of parentheses is (like my own) a little excessive (and sometimes inconsistent). The book covers Ships, crews, commands, and fleets. It does the basics well, but the book feels like a starter kit. It’s a lite version of what it claims to be. I think it would benefit from a second volume with more details on the details. Better details on the roles of each crewman and each component and each
An Excellent ToolHaving designed my own fictional ships before, I had always felt like I only had half a grasp on ship design, and hand waved over much of the elements. I feel much more prepared now, and have a lovely little vessel taking shape for my next series.LOVED the listing of ship classification and military rankings, jobs, specialties, and everything else. I'll definitely be referencing back to this!
Intended as a reference guide for others, like myself deeply interested in writing action-packed space opera. I was expecting something drier and more matter-of-fact than I got. The author's personality shines through in admonishments to explore the logical structures of military command on board starships. If you intend large-scale action, these details are just as crucial to writing space opera as figuring out Roche limits and Lagrange points. Not too long, packed with useful details.
