Tom is a naïve backpacker who stumbles upon a group of eclectic Christians in Bolivia. The communal partaking in a hallucinogenic substance, commonly known as Ayahuasca, results in elaborate visions of a subconscious entity that promises to reveal the true nature of reality and the purpose of human existence. But she insists that he must first embark on a quest to find a shaman in a remote area of the Amazon because his mind is not ready for the truth. His quest goes off the rails when he hitches a ride on a banana boat into the Brazilian borderland, where the military, the border police, locals and eventually narco-traffickers push him deeper and deeper into the lawless jungle and a conflict between his inner worrier and his subconscious guide. His perilous journey culminates in an intense ayahuasca ritual at Machu Pichu and a revelation that shocks and comforts him in equal measure."The narrative style and plotting draw the readers in to the story as if they were reading a compelling novel. The dialogue is some of the best I’ve ever worked on, and the tongue-in-check passages are also very well done.” Louise Bouzari, professional copy editor.
