Description

The latest release from the author of Darkness: A Slave's Story, Doris: Return to the Slave Farm, and The Lilac Nurse!“You have no idea who you’re dealin’ with here. He wasn’t just a slave for a few years; he was a slave most of his life. We don’t even know half his story.”George Ambrose 'Sailor' Washington wasn't released from slavery on January 1, 1863, as were most other slaves in the United States. He spent many more years in involuntary servitude. The Slave is historical fiction about the Works Progress Administration's attempt to interview all remaining former slaves across the southern states. John Burrows is a young college graduate out to make a name for himself by interviewing Sailor, who is 110 years old. With persistent pressure from his two great-granddaughters, John and Sailor come to terms with Sailor's amazing life. Along the way, something happens between John and Julia, the beautiful great-granddaughter. Both learn about how the other half truly lives, and John's education and outlook on his dark-skinned counterparts is changed forever. A love grows between John and Julia that cannot be stopped by the anti-miscegenation laws of Depression-era Missouri. A must read.

True look into the lives of slaves This is a very important and powerful read. Unfortunately it is exactly how slaves were treated. I laughed and cheered Sassy Darkness on but many parts of this book, I cried. I cried for the way that human beings treated other human beings based on their skin color and family traditions handled down from generation to generation. Definitely a five star read.

Story of hope not a sad storyUsually slave stories are just so sad and horrible for the slaves. Although this story was also sad due to the topic of slavery there was a ray of hope

SummaryThis was a pretty nice story. It had great characters . I love the determination and pride that Darkness had in herself.
