A man is murdered on a neighboring ranch, and Chase McGraw is called to assist in the investigation. Jenny is the man's 15-year-old daughter, who is now an orphan. In her despair, she finds her father's small stash of savings and attempts to hire Chase to find his killer. Janice and her new husband take her in temporarily, and the whole family becomes involved in the search, along with Bob Thornton, a deputy sheriff who is also Chase's friend.
The book's overall plot had lots of possiblities but both the plot and characters were very poorly developed. Furthermore, the editing was incredibly bad for errors easily spotted, and not just grammar errors. It was apparently such a "quickie" that neither the author nor the publisher caught the problem that they got two women in the story mixed up. They named both of them one at a time during a a couple of running paragraphs of a kidnap scene, when it was only one kidnapper and one victim with
